Written by: Maya Koehn-Wu and Natalie Kim New Art Museum in Paris Plans for the installation of one of the largest contemporary art museums in Paris, France have begun after the initial drafts to turn the empty Louvre des Antiquaires into a mall did not go as planned. The Cartier Foundation has plans for the Louvre des Antiquaires building to be redesigned by Jean Nouvel and to contain more than 65,000 square feet for permanent art exhibits and galleries. The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation hosted a non-waste art auction for its 20th Anniversary with 20 pieces total containing works by artists such as Ai Weiwei, Jack Goldstein, and the Haas Brothers on September 15, to fundraise for the preservation of wildlife. This selective, zero-waste event took place in California with about 300 people attending and had a performance by Coldplay singer Chris Martin. Brazil’s Museum Blaze On the second of September, a massive fire began in the National Museum of Brazil. Located in Rio, the cause of the fire is still unknown, however, the damage and destruction done to 20 million artifacts is irreparable. The institution housed not only some of the most important dinosaur fossils, but also “Luzia”, the oldest skeleton in the Americas at 12,000 years old. Aretha Franklin’s wardrobe is going up for Auction As the world mourns her death, Aretha Franklin’s iconic wardrobe will go up for auction. The singer, who’s most famous songs include, “Respect” and “You Make Me Feel Like”, passed away on August 16, due to cancer. The Queen of Soul’s beautiful outfits are expected to sell for as much as 4,000 dollars each on November 9th and 10th at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York City, where over 30 dresses and accessories will be sold. Gender Disparity at The Rencontres d’Arles Arguably the most prestigious international photography exhibition that runs through till September 23, the artist representation at the Rencontres d’Arles festival has received much criticism. Of the artists on display, only 34% were female photographers, and of the fifteen solo shows, only 3 were women. The blatant gender disparity displayed in the festival’s representees is reflective of the industry itself; with the significant wage differences as well as representation world-wide.
